Each sport has their heroes, the men and women who have made us proud and left us cheering. For golf, the heroes and champions are numerous, but three stand out from the crowd and truly deserve to be recognized as the incredible sportsmen they are. Three different men, three different lives, decades between them, but they all were champions at their game.
South Carolina is home to numerous North Myrtle Beach golf courses where champions have played. Renowned for their beauty and different difficulty levels, North Myrtle Beach golf courses are some the best in the country. And speaking of the best in the country, let’s take a look at some of history’s best golfers.
Francis Ouimet: Born in Brookline Massachusetts in 1893, Francis Ouimet is often attributed with popularizing the sport of golf for mainstream America. Known as the ‘father of amateur golf’ Francis Ouimet won the Massachusetts Amateur six times in his life, and at the early age of 20, won the U.S. Open, beating several other golfing pros including British Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Francis Ouimet’s amazing upset in 1913 brought golf to mainstream America and brought the sport of golf into the U.S. spotlight.
Sam Snead: Recognized as one of the all time great golfing champions, Sam Snead (nicknamed Slammin’ Sammy) was admired for the perfection of his swing, his down home attitude (he often played barefoot and wore straw hats), and of course his 82 PGA Tour wins. Born in Virginia, in 1912, Sam Snead grew to be one of America’s best golf players. His always played his best, gave his all and never lost his good attitude.
“Thinking instead of acting is the number one golf disease.” Sam Snead.
Tiger Woods: Arguably today’s best golfer, Tiger Woods has many fans and many critics. Born in Cypress, California in 1975, this American golfer has broken records, been the number one player in golf, and one of the world’s highest paid athletes for numerous years. He was awarded the PGA Tour Player of the Year a record 10 times, and continues to be the top player, after a recent comeback last year. His long drive and legendary playing skills have earned him a place as one of America’s best golfers.
“If you are given a chance to be a role model, I think you should always take it because you can influence a person’s life in a positive light, and that is what I want to do. That’s what it’s all about.” Tiger Woods.
